Dan Ovanezian joined BSTZ in 1997 in the firm's Silicon Valley office located in Sunnyvale, California.  Prior to his law career, Dan received a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Troy, New York in 1989. While at Rensselaer, he concentrated in microelectronics design and fabrication and control systems engineering. Dan has worked at IBM on the testing of memory devices and National Semiconductor Corp. in both process and product development engineering of mixed signal ASICs and power management devices based on bipolar and BiCMOS technologies.

Dan Ovanezian has a broad technology base of experience including the design and fabrication of a variety of integrated circuit devices (e.g., processors, ASICs, programmable controllers, memories, image sensors, capacitance sensors), power management devices, disk drives, medical devices and systems, fiber optics, multi-carrier communication systems, solar power, software and networking.

Dan Ovanezian’s practice focuses on counseling and services for start-ups and industry leaders in patent prosecution, trademarks, software copyrights, licensing, opinion letters, due diligence reviews accompanying mergers and acquisitions, IP portfolio evaluations, and pre-trial services related to patent infringement litigation. Dan has assisted start-ups in developing an IP portfolio and providing for their intellectual property needs all the way through IPO and other exit strategies. Dan has also assisted companies with establishing patent committees and performing IP landscaping and mining activities.

In supporting clients, Dan has experience with communicating complex technologies and legal issues in order to provide risk management solutions and value propositions at various engineering and management levels. Dan has experience managing all aspects of patent life cycle, including the mining and identification of patentable inventions, leading and advising patent committees, conducting training seminars in intellectual property matters, prosecution of patent applications with the United States Patent Office, and post patent activities such as reexaminations, licensing and infringement and validity analysis. Dan also has experience researching information relating to the products of candidate licensees to determine the applicability of a company’s IP and technologies to a candidate licensee’s products in order to provide information to help management understand how the candidate licensee products may utilize the company’s IP and might respond to valuing an offer of a license.

Dan has worked with clients, both with and without inside patent counsel, to marshal internal company resources from various organizations (technical, business, corporate legal) to lead virtual teams in successfully advancing the company’s IP strategy. Dan has effectively negotiated with business and legal leaders of third parties for closure on IP issues.

Dan Ovanezian received his Juris Doctor from Santa Clara University School of Law in 1998 and is the recipient of its High Technology Law Certificate. While in law school, Dan was a member of the Santa Clara Law Journal and served as the Senior Articles Editor. Dan has authored publications on both patents and copyrights including "Internet Search Engine Copying: Fair Use Defense to Copyright Infringement," Santa Clara Computer and High Technology Law Journal, Vol. 14, Issue 1, 1998; and “Ethical Conflicts For The Patent Practitioner,” New Matter, The Intellectual Property Law Section of the State Bar of California, Volume 29: Issue 1, 2004.
